Seasonal Plumbing Checklist for Southern California

Los Angeles may not deal with frozen pipes, but our climate brings its own set of plumbing challenges. Here is a seasonal checklist to keep your plumbing running smoothly.

Seasonal Plumbing Checklist for Southern California Seasonal Tips

Spring (March - May)

  • Inspect outdoor faucets and hose bibs. Check for drips, cracks, or low water pressure.
  • Test your sprinkler system. Look for broken heads, misaligned spray patterns, and leaks at connections.
  • Check your water heater. Spring is the perfect time for an annual flush and inspection.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts. Spring rains can cause backups if your drainage is clogged.

Summer (June - August)

  • Watch your water bill. A sudden spike often indicates a hidden leak.
  • Monitor your sewer line. Tree roots are most aggressive during dry months.
  • Be careful with your garbage disposal. Never put grease, fibrous vegetables, or fruit pits down the disposal.

Fall (September - November)

  • Locate your main water shut-off valve. Make sure it turns freely and everyone knows where it is.
  • Insulate exposed pipes. Even in LA, pipes in unheated garages and attics can be vulnerable.
  • Schedule a professional inspection. Fall is the ideal time to catch small problems.

Winter (December - February)

  • Protect pipes during cold nights. Let faucets drip slightly on cold-facing walls.
  • Know the signs of a slab leak. Warm spots on the floor, running water sounds when nothing is on.
  • Holiday drain care. Use sink strainers, dispose of grease in a container, never the drain.
